SCRIPTURAL GOVERNMENT Part 2
KORAH (Encyclopedia Information!)
Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Yahweh is among them: why then do you lift up yourselves above the assembly of Yahweh? Numbers 16:1-3
Here Moses leadership was challenged! Was all the congregation holy? Did Moses and Aaron exalt themselves over Yahweh's people? Yahweh had said to them in Exodus 19 that they were to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Exodus 19:6. But! Does that mean they were all at the same level?
Perhaps at first glance you might think that Korah was right! The Most High chose the whole nation! Now Korah complains that Moses and Aaron were imposing their leadership on them and the whole congregation! You have lifted yourself up above the assembly! Was this the case?
Here is where we left off in part one! Let's continue!
Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Yahweh is among them: why then do you lift up yourselves above the assembly of Yahweh?
And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face: and he spoke to Korah and to all his company, saying, In the morning Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him. This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company; and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Yahweh tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom Yahweh does choose, he shall be holy: you take too much upon yourself, you sons of Levi. And Moses said to Korah, Hear now, you sons of Levi: does it seem but a small thing to you, that the Elohim of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them; and that he has brought you near, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you? and do you seek the priesthood also? Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against Yahweh: and Aaron, what is he that you murmur against him? Numbers 16:1-11
If we study the text before us, we will see that Korah and those with him had exceeded their authority! They had been placed into Yahweh's service, His governmental structure and assignments were given to them as to position and duty! They were considered to be men of renown! But, that did not seem to be enough! Moses questioned them about seeking the priesthood also.
And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not come up: is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must needs make yourself also a prince over us? Moreover you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.
And Moses was very angry, and said to Yahweh, Respect not you their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them. And Moses said unto Korah, Be you and all your company before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow: and take you every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring you before Yahweh every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer. And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the congregation. Numbers 16:12-19
Now we have outright defiance against Moses' orders! Moses becomes very angry! What follows is tragic, but necessary! Now Almighty begins His response against Korah!
And Yahweh spoke to Moses and unto Aaron, saying, Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces, and said, O Elohim, the Elohim of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation? And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the congregation, saying, Get you up from around the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Numbers 16:20-24
Now an interesting development arises here! First Yahweh tells Moses and Aaron to separate themselves from this congregation so He can consume them in a moment! However, Moses and Aaron interceded on behalf of the congregation! Shall one man sin and the whole congregation take the blame? Was the congregation deceived by Korah and his followers? Notice something of great importance here! Moses and Aaron did not make intercession for Korah at all! Why? Because HE WAS BEYOND REDEMPTION! What follows reveals just how angry Almighty Yahweh really was! Observe!
And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, unless you be consumed in all their sins. So they got away from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. And Moses said, Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind. If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Yahweh has not sent me. But if Yahweh make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that pertain to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh. Numbers 16:25-30
For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries. A man that has set at nothing Moses law died without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment, think you, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of Yahweh, and ha counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that said, Vengeance belong to me, I will recompense. And again, Yahweh shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living Elohim. Hebrews 10:26-31
What follows must be understood by everyone who say they believe in the living word of Yahweh! Judgment falls on sinners! Some are just judged sooner than others!
And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground divided asunder that was under them; and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that belonged to Korah, and all their goods. So they, and all that belonged to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up. And fire came forth from Yahweh, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense. Numbers 16:31-35
This is a serious object lesson! Was this necessary? Yes! If left unattended this would have developed into a worse situation! Instant judgment is sometimes needed to re-enforce the severity of defiance to Yahweh's law!
Blessed is the man whom you choose, and cause to approach unto you,
That he may dwell in your courts:
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house,
Your holy temple. Psalm 65:4
And Yahweh spoke unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathersí house, of all their princes according to their fathersí houses, twelve rods: write you every manís name upon his rod. And you shall write Aaronís name upon the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathersí houses. And you shall lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. And it shall come to pass, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you. And Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathersí houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods. And Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the tent of the testimony.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and bare ripe almonds. And Moses brought out all the rods from before Yahweh unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod. And Yahweh said to Moses, Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they die not. This did Moses: as Yahweh commanded him, so did he. Numbers 17:1-11
Remember Aaron's rod was used to show the power of Yahweh in Egypt!
For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaronís rod swallowed up their rods. Exodus 7:12
Having a golden altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was a golden pot holding the manna, and Aaronís rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; Hebrews 9:4
For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to Yahweh, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: who can bear gently with the ignorant and erring, for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity; and by reason of it is bound, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no man takes the honor unto himself, but when he is called of Yahweh, even as was Aaron. Hebrews 5:1-4
Now Yahweh's selection is visibly plain to all of Israel in Moses time! The selection process separates Aaron from all the rest! The rebellion is quelled! Moses is still the selected leader of Israel and Aaron is still the High Priest!
Stay Tuned! This ends Part two!
